Pauline Casey - Sports Development Officer & Sports Inclusion Disability Officer Waterford Sports Partnership

Waterford’s SportsAbility Forum was established in 2016, with representatives from various Disability Organisations, Voluntary and Statutory Organisations and National Governing Bodies. Our mission is to actively promote inclusion and enable participation in sport and physical activity for people with a disability in Waterford. We aim to achieve this through five core values;

  • Inclusiveness - We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to participate in sport and physical activity. We are passionate about the power of sport and physical activity to engage, include and inspire people to reach their potential, improve their health and well-being and to improve quality of life with social opportunities.
  • Quality - We promote the principle of ensuring a greater quality of life through physical activity and sport. We aim to achieve this by promoting an active forum with quality information and resources.
  • Relationships - We recognise the importance of our relationships, the synergy of our collective strengths, the power of community, partnership and collaboration and the value of team effort. We want the experience of working with us to be positive and progressive.
  • Respect - We respect the unique and diverse contributions and efforts of everyone to encourage an environment that is open, safe and welcoming where we treat people fairly and with courtesy and kindness.
  • Advocacy - We advocate towards creating a more inclusive society for all.
  • Empowerment - We promote the empowerment of people to make choices and give them the opportunity to access and make sport and physical activity part of their everyday life.

In addition to this, the forum aims to increase the awareness of physical activity opportunities for people with a disability in Waterford.

In order to achieve all this, the forum members set clear objectives over a 3 year period which include;

  1. Hold meetings every quarter with forum members to share information
  2. Run an annual SportsAbility Day/Weekend
  3. Have a strong social media presence a
  4. Have a strong recognisable brand

Due to Covid19, our SportsAbility Weekend which was due to take place on Friday 11th and Saturday 12th September in WIT Arena has been postponed.  As a forum we felt strongly about following through on our plans and after some brainstorming decided to develop a Podcast Series in place of the SportsAbility Weekend. Episode 1 of the Podcast series will be released in September and following episodes will be released on a fortnightly basis. Not to give too much away but we will have some very well known speakers including paralympians, international record holders, parents and nutritionists just to name a few.  We will be releasing information on our Waterford SportsAbility Facebook page in the coming weeks, so watch this space. This page will also keep you up-to-date with news, upcoming physical activity programmes and events for people with a disability in Waterford. We are focusing on increasing our followers and would encourage you to like and share our page.  You’ll find us on Facebook @WaterfordSportsability. If your organisation has anything they would like us to share please tag us in your posts or message the page privately and we will be happy to share!

If you are interested in becoming a member of our forum or would like more information on who we are and what we do please contact Pauline Casey on 086 7837385 or email [email protected] .
