Two men were arrested last night following the discovery of drugs at a COVID checkpoint in Waterford.

An off duty member of Waterford Garda Divisional Drugs Unit observed a vehicle known to him on the M9 motorway at 7.40 pm.

The men aged 42 and 38, were stopped at a checkpoint at The Grannagh Junction Roundabout, Ferrybank, and searched by the divisional drugs unit.

Two identical quantities, 28 Grams in each, of suspected Dia-morphine, concealed in plastic wrapping, valued at 7,840 euro was located hidden in the car.

They were arrested for the offence, brought to Waterford Garda Station and are being detained under section 2 of Criminal Justice Drug Trafficking Act.

Gardai in Waterford City arrested 14 other people over the Easter weekend.

One person was arrested in Waterford City in the early hours of Sunday morning on suspicion of drug driving.

They were stopped at a COVID checkpoint at 1.25am.

There were 13 other arrests between Friday and yesterday.

Two people were picked up for assaults as well as two further arrests for breach of domestic violence orders.

Three people were detained for thefts, one for possession of drugs for sale or supply and five for public order incidents.

Gardai say all were dealt with by way of charge sheet, summons or files to the DPP for direction.
