Thousands of people across Waterford City and County took park in this morning's 'Darkness into Light' walk in aid of Pieta House.

The mental health charities flagship fundraiser got underway in the early hours and finished as dawn broke.

Nicole Dunphy from Tramore told WLR that it's "very important to raise awareness for Pieta House - it's brilliant the whole community coming together and walking as one today."

"At the moment I don't need it," said Wexford man Stephen, "but in the future I might - there's many other people out there who currently don't need it, but they might come upon a time when they need it and it's great to support it now for the future."

Dungarvan woman Jackie De Paor took part in the event in the West of the County.

"It's lovely and dark at that time in the morning, then we come along and we're there with a group of people," she said. "It's very reflective of people who are experiencing loneliness, which is a huge part of mental health."

"You're surrounded by a lot of people, sometimes just a smile, or a wink or a nod lets you know you're not alone."
