John Pratt has been selected to stand as a General Election candidate for the Labour Party in Waterford.
The Dungarvan-Lismore councillor defeated Waterford and Tramore representative Brendan Byrne for the candidacy.
The Tallow man paid tribute to Mr Byrne after the convention:
"I think Brendan is going to be a man for the future...I was always wanting to put my name forward, so it just happened we had two people who had that interest and really wanted to go out there and win a seat back for Waterford".
City-based Brendan Byrne said the party was united following the convention:
"All of us there tonight we gained a united party, we gained a bright future and I'm looking forward to supporting John Pratt as we go forward in challenging the real issues - 24 hour cardiac care, homelessness and University status for Waterford to name a few. "
